38 Sopranos in the Puritani Mad Scene

One of the most interesting parts of Bel Canto is the ability of the singer to express themselves with added ornamentation, variations and cadenzas. This improvisational quality is highlighted in the following collection of historic and modern singers in the Mad Scene cabaletta from I Puritani, “Vien diletto”.

 

Pacini’s Medea 1993

Pacini is a unfairly neglected contemporary to Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini. He was a great composer and certainly deserves to be revived more often. He was popularly known as the “King of the Cabaletta” due to his fondness of the musical expression in his works.

This recording benefits from the Polish dramatic coloratura Jolanta Omilian, who gives a impassioned reading of the title role.
